Summer’s here! That means more sunshine, more outdoor adventures—and unfortunately, more bug bites, rashes, and skin irritation. Whether you’re lounging in the backyard, hiking a trail, or enjoying a picnic, summer comes with its own set of itchy, stingy challenges.
But don’t worry—your local pharmacy team is here to help you stay cool, calm, and comfortable all season long. Let’s take a closer look at the most common summer skin concerns and how to prevent and treat them.
🦟 Bug Bites
As the temperature rises, so does insect activity. Knowing how to identify and treat different bug bites is key to minimizing discomfort and avoiding complications.
Common Summer Bug Bites:
Mosquito
Chigger
Flea
Tick
How to Identify Bug Bites:
Mosquito Bites:
Red, puffy welts that appear shortly after being bitten. They’re itchy and can sometimes carry viruses or parasites. Avoid scratching to prevent infection.
Chigger Bites:
Tiny red spots, often in a line or cluster, especially near tight clothing (waistbands, ankles). Intense itching usually develops hours later.
Flea Bites:
Small, red bumps—often grouped—on the legs and ankles. Usually very itchy and can come from pets or wildlife.
Tick Bites:
Often painless and unnoticed until you find the tick attached. Can sometimes lead to a bullseye rash, which may indicate Lyme disease. Medical attention may be needed.
🛡️ Bug Bite Prevention Tips
Avoid standing water, dense brush, and wooded areas.
Cover Up: Wear long sleeves, pants, socks, and light-colored clothing.
Use Insect Repellent with DEET (10–35%). Avoid using DEET on infants under 2 months and use no more than 30% DEET on children.
